Clubs and Activities

Singers- This is SWV's Chorus. It is comprised of outstanding 4th graders with a commitment to music through singing, outstanding citizenship and high academic achievement. This group performs regularly through the community.

Guitar- We were fortunate to be awarded a grant by Target for a set of guitars. All 4th grade students will learn basic guitar skills during regular music class with an opportunity to perform publicly on the guitar at the end of the school year.

Recorders- All 3rd and 4th grade students learn the recorder as a part of the music curriculum. We use a highly fun and motivating program called Recorder Karate.

Performances- Every student will have the opportunity to participate in a public performance at least once a year with their grade level. Other performance opportunities are provided throughout the year for students who take private music lessons (such as piano, violin, etc.). These students are encouraged to bring in their music (and/or instrument) and play for their classmates during music class. Two talent shows are hosted. One at the beginning of the school year (in conjunction with the Fall Fundraiser) and a second at the end of the year called the Brown Bag Recital.

SWV has two interest clubs available for 3rd and 4th graders. These clubs meet on a weekly basis during tutorial time and are open to 3rd and 4th graders who meet the following criteria.
1. Makes satisfactory academic progress in class
2. Exhibits satisfactory behavior in the classroom
3. Exhibits satisfactory behavior & participation in the club

Chess Club-
Chess Club participants learn the names of the chess pieces, how they move, the basic rules of the game, and moves such as castling, as well as some of the etiquette of the game. Students play each other throughout the year and at times participate in mini tournaments. In late spring, SWV Chess Club members participate in a chess tournament with South Knoll and Rock Prairie chess club members.

Theater Club-
Through various theater games and activities, Theater Club members work on learning basic theater and communication skills. At least twice a semester, students get together in small groups to make up their own skits and perform them for others in the club. This allows them not only to practice theatrical skills, but also to strengthen their creativity, leadership and their ability to work cooperatively in a group.

Spelling Bee-
The SWV Spelling Bee is an oral bee that ultimately leads to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC. It is open to 3rd and 4th graders with this year's bee taking place in January. The SWV winner will proceed to the next level of competition. Study words for the bee are available at SWV or can be accessed at

The CSISD elementary UIL Meet takes place in January and SWV teams have been busily getting ready for the big event. UIL gives students an opportunity to compete in events such as Storytelling, Oral Reading, Music Memory, Creative Writing, Spelling and more. We welcome community volunteers or parents who would like to help coach a UIL team next year. If you are interested in helping out, please email Becky Lane at

UIL Music Memory- This is a team of 3 3rd Grade and 3 4th grade students would auditioned for the team. We meet weekly after school to listen to and study a wide range of music. The students then compete in the district meet in January.

First in Math tab-
SWV students are excited to be involved in the First In Math® Online Mathematics Program. First in Math allows students to progress through both basic and advanced skills at their own pace. Its engaging format motivates students who need reinforcement and those who need a challenge. Students can access this program from any computer, at home as well as at school, by going to and typing in their individual login and password.
